7 Networking Secrets Every Interior Designer Needs to Know

Networking doesn’t have to feel like a chore. If you’re an interior designer juggling a busy schedule, the idea of attending events, joining groups, or sending messages can feel overwhelming. But here’s the thing: the right networking strategy can actually save you time and bring in fresh opportunities—sometimes without even trying too hard.

Let’s break down these 7 networking secrets every interior design needs to know, are designed to help you grow your business, make connections, and keep the momentum going without overcomplicating things.

#1: Join an Industry Organization (and actually attend events!)

Interior design organizations (like the Interior Design Society) are gold mines for networking. Not only do they host events where you can meet other designers, but they’re also packed with insider tips and tools. Ever heard of the Interior Design Society? I’m on the National Board and can tell you firsthand—these groups can open doors.

Why bother? People talk. You could learn about a new marketing platform or get an invitation to collaborate on a design project. Just by showing up, you could even land a client! And being part of these organizations increases your credibility and helps you stay in the know.

#2: Join a Charity and Get Involved

Charities are more than feel-good opportunities—they’re networking jackpots. Most charities host galas, fundraisers, and events where your design skills could shine. Get involved in planning or decorating, and you’ll quickly become part of their inner circle.

Why does this work? People love working with someone who shares their passion. When they see your commitment, they’ll think of you first for their next project—or recommend you to someone else.

#3: Attend Local Networking Groups

Local groups or small community meetups can be game-changers. These groups give you face-to-face time with other business owners, potential clients, and people who could refer you.

Why it matters: People trust referrals. The more relationships you build in these groups, the more likely someone will think of you when their friend says, “I need an interior designer.”

#4: Make Friends on Facebook (The Right Way!)

You can do so much more on Facebook than scroll. At its core, Facebook is a free networking tool. You can look at profiles, join groups, and send friendly messages. Keep your focus on them. Ask about their needs, show genuine interest, and keep it short and sweet.

And while you’re at it, don’t forget to drop a link to your best work. But don’t overdo it–no one likes a hard sell.

#5: Go Out and Explore New Places

Feel like you’re running out of leads? Switch it up. Try a new city, attend a grand opening, or visit a swap meet. These places are full of people looking for services—sometimes, they don’t even know they need a designer until they meet you.

Why this works: Fresh faces mean fresh opportunities. You never know who’s planning a renovation or needs help for an upcoming event.

#6: Join Group Tours That Match Your Interests

Group tours are popping up everywhere, from Airbnb to local cultural events. These tours often highlight businesses or spaces, meaning you get direct access to the best spots. Here’s the move: Introduce yourself, get a business card, and follow up later. Mention the tour and how your services could fit their needs. It’s easy, low-pressure, and effective.

#7: Check Out High-End Stores and Art Galleries

Art gallery events and boutique stores attract a specific kind of crowd—the kind that’s likely to need your expertise. Strike up conversations with owners, managers, or even attendees. Ask thoughtful questions about why they’re there, and mention your services if the timing feels right. Watch for new store openings or developments in your area, because developers and business owners often need design input. Your pitch might land you a project!

    Nancy,
Hi my name is Lori Hothan, and just read through the tips on Networking absolutely love the ideas. Some O had, but some I did not have which I love!
I don’t know if you thought about this Nancy, but what if you offered some webinars for Interior Designers starting out with their business. You still would make money, but also make it somewhat or a little affordable for those new interior designers start out.

Hi Lori, Yes! I love that you said this because my team and I are in the process of developing a new monthly program for newer designers that would get them access to me and training based on questions they submit in advance and I’ll answer live. Does this seem like something you would be interested in?

        Hi Nancy
If you truly stick to do actual webinars then yes, I possibly would be interested.
What are you looking at from a cost perspective, to try and keep it affordable?
Be creative in seeing where young Interior Designers need webinars to help guide them along the way you in their career…

Hi Lori, There are plenty of free webinars, I’m talking about a coaching program where newer designers can get answers to their specific questions from me or be directed to specific information that I know can satisfy whatever they are struggling with.

Keeping it affordable is the key! I am still trying to figure out the structure and price. But I have some ideas.

I’d love your feedback. I believe in an ASK campaign before I roll out a program. I’d love to chat with you about it if you are willing. No obligation to join anything in the future, it’s a market study for me.

I friend requested you on FB so we can chat. Nancy
